A pink Poui tree blooms on my way to work yesterday. In UWI St Augustine, the conventional wisdom around campus was that if you didn’t have your coursework under control and in your head by the time the Poui trees on Campus bloomed… you’d have a really hard time passing your exams.
Those who “didn’t hold de draff” would slowly transform into “matta beasts”; mystical creatures who lived in the library from sun up til closing time, subsisting on nothing but Nescafe coffee and very little sleep.
We also never got a haircut around exam time. Then all that we’d spent months cramming in our heads would just evaporate into thin air.
Big hair was a big plus when it came to mental retention… π
Isn’t it still too early for Matta season?
My recuring nightmare around that time of year while I was on campus, was that I fell off the sidewalk and knocked my head open. No one would be around to help me catch my matta before it rolled down the drain.
Every night that dream would wake me up in a sweat.
Well, yeah… semester started last week, but the flowers are in bloom… so if mankind eh start studying yet :)… is pressure!
De poui trees doh lie (climate change not withstanding)… π
Oh… and that was a really funny dream! π
I could laugh at that now, but if that had happened to me when I was on Camp, I would’ve been palpitating too!
